Raksha Bandhan's
main custom is a bracelet of tissue threads called rakhi. The rakhi is
traditionally given to a brother of his sister. The promise is that the sister
will pray to protect his sister for his brother's vow. Brother and sister often
trade sweets and donate money to their brothers and sisters and often sweets.
Today, but brothers and sisters, people participate. Sometimes the ceremony was
held by close friends, cousins, priests, and soldiers.
For many years, Raksha
Bandhan has been held with the same traditions. Only the way to celebrate the
event has changed with the changing lifestyle. The inherent power in this day
is to unite the siblings. The growing distances evoke the desire to be more
together. On this auspicious day, all brothers and sisters try to reach one
another. The happy meeting, the rare family reunion, the old feeling of
fraternity and sisterhood demand a massive celebration.
It's a chance to meet and celebrate for
everybody. They also share delicious food, beautiful candies and exchange
gifts. But safety is a priority this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In
a very short period, people get affected. Staying indoors must be prioritized.
Children, in particular who have not yet increased immunity.
Instead of being
eager to meet a large family, kids have to focus online, we have a lot of rakhi gifts for kids to
choose from and presents that can be shipped beforehand to each of their little
siblings. The number of kids celebrating long-distance rakshabandhan this year
is much higher with travel restrictions in place all over the country and
abroad. That has made us increase of lists of a variety of gifts which kids
would like. Some kids have gone the extra careful way of not even messaging the
sacred thread. But other use video calls to watch others complete the rituals
on their behalf and open the gifts.
